Though we were not in a position to conduct blood donation Camp for our group company staff on 17th Sept 2008, we have initiated ( with the good push and support from Vikas Agarwal, Executive Director of TCI Telenet Solutions) and conducted the blood donation camp with the help of TCI and XPS at TCI ,Transport House, Masjid, Mumbai on 16th Oct 2008.
With the good support and co-ordination of Mr.Rameswarlal, V.P, of TCI, Mr.Ajit singh, RM of XPS, we sucessfully conducted the Blood donation camp and 83 people had donated their blood for noble cause which goes to needy and poor patient through KEM government Hospital. Staff have come voluntarily and happily donate their blood. We have given certificate from Bhoruka blood bank as well as a certificate and a medal from Government side through KEM Hospital to the donors and other comforts.

Gudieline for conducting voluntary blood donation camps

1. Share objectives of the initiative with State AIDS Control Society (SACS) or NACO. Also highlighted the fact that seven corporate bodies has already been agreed to participates in this initiative to promote voluntary blood donation across the country.
2. Press release about the inititives before the organisation of camp. Outcome of the initiative across the country will be shared with partner organisation within a week. Compiled report may also be sent to media houses for publication.
3. Email to the employees on the inititive and importance of voluntary blood donation.
4. Inauguration by local influential persons (Minister/ MP etc.) or Managing Director/ Chairman or any other higher officials of the organisation.
4. Speaker should share the following:
- Abour Late P. D. Agarwal- his life and achievement.
- As his role in transport sector is well known, speaker should focus on unseen side of
Late P. D. Agarwal- his social initiatives. Two of such initiative may be highlighted- a)

e.g. Thallasaemia, Haemophilia etc. and b) provision of safe drinking water in parts of

Q. When a patient requires transfusion of blood or blood products ?

Ans. – Many diseases may cause anemia or fall in haemoglobin level or there may be fall of any component level in blood of the patient. In Road traffic accident there may be massive haemorrhage. During surgery there is huge blood loss in some cases. In all these cases Doctors advise to transfuse blood or blood components as an emergency life saving device.

Q. Who is a voluntary blood donor ?

Ans.- A person whose age is in between 18 – 60 years and body weight at least 45 Kg and who is fit both mentally and physically and who has mot suffered from any major illness in last one year, may be a Voluntary blood donor.

Q. How many times a voluntary blood donor can donate blood and at what interval ?

Ans. – A blood donor can donate blood at an interval of 3 months. Hence, he/she can donate blood 4 times in a year and considering age group 18 – 60 years he/she can donate blood 168 times in lifetime.

Q. What are the responsibilities of a voluntary blood donor ?

Ans. – A blood donor is to give right information about his/her health condition to Doctor and health workers so that they can assess him/her well.

Q. Can a blood donor donate blood of he/she think so ?

Ans.- No, it is absolutely not so. A blood donor has to undergo a medical screening procedure. If Doctor permits him/her to donate blood then only he/she can donate, otherwise not. A person can not donate blood without undergoing medical examination.

Q. Is it necessary to donate in empty stomach ?

Ans. – No, absolutely no. A light meal is necessary before or after donation. If someone donates blood in empty stomach he/she may feel dizziness or reeling of head. Again, if someone donates after taking a heavy meal, there are chances of nausea, vomiting of donor as well as quality of donated blood is not of good standard (lipaemic plasma). On conclusion, it is necessary to take light meal before or after donation.

Q. - How much blood is there in our body ? If we donate blood, is there any damage to our body ?

Ans. – A normal healthy fully grown male carries 76 c.c. of blood /kg body weight and in case of female it is 66 c.c. of blood /kg body weight. All Physiological activities in our body require 50 c.c. of blood/kg body weight, the rest of blood is surplus to our body. We take out 6 -8 c.c. of blood/kg body weight during blood donation which is only a portion of surplus blood in our body. For example as it happens when someone donates his/her surplus money to other person. There is no damage to our body after blood donation.

Q. - How much blood we donate ?

Ans. – We donate 8 c.c./kg body weight which is only a part of surplus blood of our blood.

Q. – What is the law about the amount / volume of blood donation from a donor ?

Ans. – If we multiply 45 Kg, which is the minimum body weight of a donor with 8 c.c. of blood / kg body weight which is the amount of blood to be donated then it comes to 350 c.c. of blood which a donor can donate in our country. 49 c.c. is the volume of anticoagulant, collectively it comes to around 400 c.c. and along with weight of blood bag total weight becomes 450 gram approximately.

Q. – Is it necessary to take rest after blood donation or to take huge amount of food ?

Ans. – There is no need to take rest after blood donation, only hard physical labour or driving to be avoided within 24 hours of blood donation. It is better to take light meal before and after donation, after then one can take his/her normal meals.

Q. - What are the difficulties which may arise after blood donation ?

Ans. – Some donors become sick after blood donation especially during summer times. The donor finds darkness in his/her eyes, feels restless , pulse become feeble – in medical term we call it Vaso – Vagal attack. In this situation, the donor is to lie down in bed with the foot end raised. Crowd to be dispersed and the Medical Officer present there to be called on.
Sometimes the vein which is pricked may develop swelling and pain which is called Thrombophlebitis. In such cases one special ointment to be applied there which is to continue for 7 – 10 days and 2 – 3 times in a day. Initially rubbing of ice over that place causes comfort.

Q. - How many days blood can be stored in blood bank?

Ans. - Whole blood and packed cell can be stored upto 35 days in blood bank. Packed or concentrated RBC can be stored upto 42 days if it is collected in SAGM bags. Platelets are stored upto 5 days. Plasma can be stored upto 1 year.

Q. - What are the advantages a donor gets after blood donation from blood bank?

Ans. - One donor has to undergo heath check up before blood donation. If he/she has any health problem can be detected during that check up especially donor’s blood pressure is checked before donation. Donor gets one credit card which is valid for 1 year. If donor wants blood for self then he/she can get it free of cost. For non donor recipient it is given at a subsidized prefixed price. This is applicable for whole blood, packed cell and plasma only and subjected to availability of the particular blood group and that particular component. Donor also gets one metal badge or certificate of honour. Blood test report and blood group report is given to donor within 35 days of donation from blood bank.

Q. - Is there any chance of infection during blood donation?

Ans. - No. we use blood bag system during blood donation which can be used once only. Hence, there is no chance of infection.

Q. - What are the tests done with the donated blood?

Ans. - The following tests are done with the donated blood unit:

(1) HIV (I & II) by ELISA method
(2) HBsAg by ELISA method
(3) HCV by ELISA method
(4) VDRL by RPR method
(5) Malaria Parasite by slide method

Blood haemoglobin of the donor is also checked before donation.
Blood Grouping and Cross Matching with the recipient blood sample.

Q. - Is there any blood sugar check up done with the donated blood?

Ans. - No.

Q. - What are the responsibilities of a donor after blood donation?

Ans. - Blood donor is to collect donor credit card, blood group report and blood test report as well as the metal badge or the certificate. He is to be aware of rules and regulation to collect blood from blood bank. Donor is also to donate blood at regular intervals and feel the greatness of blood donation.

Why the initiative?
Sri P. D. Agarwal, founder of TCI-ABC- Bhoruka-Gati group has catalyzed changes in various sectors that have a positive impact on the country as well as the society. One of his unseen sides is combating blood crisis in Eastern India by establishing first non-governmental blood bank and ensured blood transfusion of number of children suffering from Thallasaemia and Hemophilia.
The objectives of Sri P. D. Agarwal initiatives are
- To remember his initiative and vision to combat blood crisis.
- To disseminate his vision regarding blood donation to people and organisations closely related to him.
- To observe his death anniversary by the initiative that will have positive impact on blood safety all over the country.

Who can participate in the initiative?
Any organizations or individual who have respect for founder of Bhoruka Blood Bank may participate in the initiative.

Is it focused on a particular day or will be continued for defined time period?
It is focused on a particular day that is 17th September every year. Awareness programme, blood donation camp and other activities must be organized on that day. However, display of IEC materials in the office premises should start at least three weeks before.

What is the role of participating organization?
Participating organization may participate in the three following ways:
Ensuring awareness about the initiative, thus promoting awareness of voluntary blood donation.
Organizing blood donation camps.
Donating medical equipment to promote blood safety.

How they can participate?
Ensuring awareness about the initiative:
- Display IEC materials of the initiatives in the offices.
- SMS/email to every employee on the initiatives as well as importance of blood donation.
- Message on vehicles, trucks.
- Information on the initiative at the organizational website.

Organizing blood donation camps:
Blood donation camp may be organized by following three ways:
- By organizing blood donation camp in office, warehouse etc.
- By supporting local organisations (youth club, NGOs) to organize blood donation camp.
- In case of minimum no of employee, they can go to nearest blood bank to donate blood.
Donating medical equipment:
Participating organization may donate equipment to various blood banks run by either Red Cross or voluntary/charitable organisations that will facilitate promotion of blood safety and rational use of blood. Name of the donor organization and the initiative should be written on the donated equipment.

Role of participating organization: should it be limited to organize blood donation camp among its employee?
As mentioned above, it’s not limited to organize blood donation camp.

What are about the IEC materials (poster, brochure, banner) about the initiative?
Three IEC materials has been developed, that are as follows:1. Banner may be displayed at their main offices, warehouses etc.2. Minimum two posters may be displayed in each office, warehouses and other set up.3. Ideally, one brochure should be given to each employee of the participating organisation.
Bhoruka Blood Bank will share the design of IEC materials with all participating organisations, who in turn may print IEC materials as per the need. For main offices of the participating organisations at Kolkata, Bhoruka Blood Bank will supply IEC materials.
Partners may change/add something in the IEC materials as per their need, but should not changed overall configuration. They may add logos of other organisations/subsidiaries, agreed to participated in the drive, but should not remove any logos that are already in the IEC materials.
Bhoruka Blood Bank is also developing materials that may be displayed in the website of the organisations and certificates for the employees who will donate blood.

Where should we organize blood donation camp?
Focus should be given to states having poor voluntary blood donation status. ( * Poor performing states in voluntary blood donation: Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal).

Moreover, blood donation camp should be organized at Kolkata as it is the places where, Sri P. D. Agarwal has established Bhoruka Blood Bank and has ensured promotion of voluntary blood donation.

How will we organize voluntary blood donation camp?
In case of organizing camp in Kolkata, you may contact directly to Bhoruka Blood Bank that in turn will organize camp on behalf of the organization.
Apart from the above, Bhoruka Blood Bank will make arrangement of round the clock donation at its blood bank on 17th September 2008, where any employee of partner organisations may come and donate blood.

Outside Kolkata, Partner organization may contact nearest government blood bank or blood bank run by Indian Red Cross Society or reputed NGO/charitable organisations that run the blood bank as “not for profit” basis.
Under the initiative, no blood donation camp should organize with business oriented or profit making blood bank.

Just two people from one of our office want to donate blood on that day? What should we do? No blood bank wants to organize camp for two person?
Most of the blood bank has collected blood in their premises. In such cases, employees may go to nearest reputed blood bank and donate blood.

What should we do for the employee who will donate blood?
As it’s a voluntary donation, no benefit should be given to donor. But as a token appreciation partner organizations may do the following:
- A letter of appreciation from the organization.
- A certificate (prepared by Bhoruka Blood Bank) duly signed by head of partner organization or anyone nominated by him and representative of Bhoruka Blood Bank.
- May grants half day leave to the employees who donate blood on 17th September.

Can we do anything else to make the initiative more effective:
Yes, by the following way:
Senior officials of the partner Organisation should attend the initiatives and will speak on Sri P. D. Agarwal and his vision on voluntary blood donation.
Meet with State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) of the concerned state and share about Sri P. D. Agarwal initiative and activities of concerned state. SBTC is part of health department and based in respective States AIDS Control Society (SACS). Project Director (SACS) and/or and Deputy Director (Blood Safety) is the person with whom you may contact. Partners based in Delhi may communicate about the initiative with DG (NACO) and/or Blood Safety personnel of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).
Invite Minister, elected representative and/or other key personnel of the locality to inaugurate the camp.

How will Bhoruka Blood Bank will document activities under the initiative conducted by partner organization in various states of India:Bhoruka Blood will collect information on Sri P. D. Agarwal initiative through a structure format from every partner organization. After that it will compile the data and share reports with the partners and NACO.

Same can be true in cases of blood banking and treatment of Blood Related disorder in Eastern India. Scarcity of blood, either quantity and quality and treatment of blood disorders was one of the need of that timing, lots of children who were either Thallaesaemic or Haemophilic are suffering, their parents could not be able to do anything but to bear the pain of their children. When he envisioned the effect of blood crisis, he has established Bhoruka Research Centre for Haematology and Blood Transfusion, popularly known as Bhoruka Blood Bank in 1982 with the aim to ensure availability and accessibility of safe and quality blood for general population. This initiative has changed the lives of number of children suffering from Thallasaemia and Haemophilia. One of the objectives of Bhoruka Blood Bank is to combat blood crisis by promotion of voluntary blood donation so that no one can suffer due to paucity of blood.

From the very beginning, Bhoruka Blood Bank has been working to provide quality and safe blood. Since 1988, all the blood units have been tested for HIV. It rejected professional blood donor also since 1988, whereas Supreme Court has banned Professional Blood Donor in 1998. Screening of Hepatitis C has started in Bhoruka Blood Bank since 1998 whereas it was made mandatory by Supreme Court in 2001.
Bhoruka has started separation of whole blood in to various blood components to ensure that blood donated by one person may be beneficial to more than one patient. Bhoruka Blood Bank has ensured 96% of voluntary blood donation.
Bhoruka Blood Bank is first ISO certified Blood Bank in the region and having Regional Blood Transfusion Council (RBTC) Status.

Bhoruka Blood Bank has been working uninterruptedly since last 26years to fulfill his vision regarding voluntary blood donation and would like to propagate and sustain his message across the country, initially by involvement of organization established by late Sri P. D. Agarwal.

Hence, Bhoruka Blood Bank has proposed that all industry/organization that are either founded by or related to him across the country should come together on 17th September every year (Death anniversary of Sri P. D. Agarwal) and remember as well as promote his vision on blood safety.

Organisation can participate in the initiative on 17th September every year and requested to do the following:
Organize seminar on Sri P.D. Agarwal Initiative to promote voluntary blood donation.
Organize voluntary blood donation camp, if adequate number of employees would like to donate blood.
Support voluntary organization, local club to organize voluntary blood donation camp on that day, with special focus on poor performing states*.
In case of limited no of employee, motivate them to donate blood at the nearest blood bank (preferably government blood bank, blood bank run by Red Cross or Regional Blood Transfusion Council).
Support reputed blood bank run by Charitable Organisation by providing equipments/other necessary support that will promote blood safety.
Writing a letter of appreciation by Head of the organization to the employee who will donate blood on 17th September. Half day leave may also be sanctioned.

* Poor performing states in voluntary blood donation: Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal

IEC guidelines for P. D. Agarwal Initiative to Promote Voluntary Blood Donation:
In all seminars, blood donation camp and other related activities, banner, poster and brochure should have same design, provided by Bhoruka Blood Bank.
Poster should be displayed at every office, preferably from at least one month before the events.
Every staffs of the organization should provide one brochure.
Display the message at the website of the organizations.

P.D. Agarwal Initiative to promote voluntary blood donation is looking for a long term impact on blood safety in India. Hence, every activity needs to be communicated to respective State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC). Bhoruka Blood Bank will compile the all activities under the initiative and share it with National AIDS Control Organisation.
In the first year, the initiative will focus on advocacy with a minimum target of voluntary blood donation of 3000 (100/states and UT). If the initiative has been supported by organization/individual who believe in vision of Sri P. D. Agarwal, this initiative will have measurable impact at the national level within 5 year period.
